When regularing towing cargo weighing more than 30,000 pounds, recreational and commercial drivers rely on trailers with gooseneck hitches. Instead of fastening to the back of a vehicle, they're installed on a hitch in the cargo bed of a pickup truck. The alternative coupling allows for the trailer to make smoother right turns. However, there are three different types of gooseneck hitches. While they're all minimally invasive and easy to operate, one may suit your needs better than the others.

What Gooseneck Installations Are Available?

1. Above-Bed

Above-bed hitches are the easiest to install. If you already have a fifth-wheel hitch, you can use the same rails to attach an above-bed gooseneck. The hitches are easily removed if you need more space in the pickup bed or if a project requires a different type of hitch.

2. Under-Bed

TrailersInstalling an under-bed hitch requires creating a hole in the floor of the truck bed. The ball of the hitch extends to the cargo area from the hole. Under-bed holes are usually only about four inches, making them unnoticeable. In fact, most under-bed hitches don't need to have the truck's frame drilled. Instead, they're custom-fit for the vehicle. Some under-bed hitch variations allow the driver to remove the hitch ball when it's not in use. In other cases, the hitch ball can also be lowered, so it's on the same plane as the truck bed. The amenity allows drivers to have full use of the bed when transporting other objects.

3. Fold-Down

Many trailers offer a fold-down gooseneck hitch, as it provides the benefits of both above-bed and under-bed installations. Like above-bed hitches, fold-downs are mounted on a plate in the pickup's bed. Similar to under-bed hitches, fold-downs need rails below the truck bed. What sets fold-downs apart is that the hitch's ball can fold out of sight when it's not being used.

For it to work, a large hole is cut in the pickup truck's bed. Despite the hole's size, you won't need to alter the factory exhaust system during installation.

When a hitch isn't necessary, the ball will fold down, providing unobstructed space in the bed.

Custom rails for fold-downs are also available for a tighter and more secure fit.
