After your cat receives surgical care at a vet clinic, you’ll need to monitor their recovery. Your vet will provide guidelines, though you may still have questions. Here are the answers to common questions about surgery aftercare to help your cat recuperate.

What You Should Know About Post-Surgery Care for Cats

How do I care for my cat post-surgery?

Your feline friend will need time to recover, and while they do, keep them warm and comfortable. Provide a soft, warm bed in a confined space to minimize their activity and avoid straining the wound. If you have multiple pets in the home, then isolate your cat from the others to let them rest peacefully.

How do I care for my cat’s stitches?

Depending on the type of surgery, a cat may have external skin sutures or surgical staples on the incision site that require monitoring. Check the incision daily to ensure it’s healing properly. If you see swelling, discoloration, or discharge, contact the vet clinic immediately.

Also, keep the surgical site dry. Prevent your cat from licking, chewing, or scratching the area—they may need an Elizabethan collar to remove those temptations.

Is it normal for a cat to behave differently?

vet-clinicWhile recovering from anesthesia or sedatives, a cat may be drowsy and less energetic than usual. They may also be cranky, sensitive, or slightly aggressive during recovery. They should start acting normally again within a day or two.

When can my cat’s routine return to normal?

Though your cat may be energetic and ready to play, it’s best to limit strenuous activity while they have stitches. Also, don’t bathe them to avoid introducing bacteria to the incision site. Your vet may provide medications and dietary restrictions; follow their instructions to help your cat through a comfortable and speedy recovery.
