Boilers and water heaters both heat water for your home, but the former can perform additional functions that the latter can’t. While both appliances heat water, their methods for doing so are notably different. Review this brief guide to learn about the key distinctions between the two appliances and how each option can serve your home and family.

Boilers

A boiler uses electricity, gas, or oil as a fuel source. When the unit turns on, the fuel heats up and warms the water located in the cylinders. This creates steam, which then travels to the radiators, radiant flooring, and other distribution devices to warm the various rooms of the home. The steam also travels to taps and appliances to provide heat.

There are three different types of boilers. A combination model is a boiler and water heater in one compact unit, making it the perfect choice for smaller spaces.

A system boiler has hot water cylinders but no cold water tank, and it draws and heats water directly from the main line. Once the cylinders run out of hot water, you must wait for them to refill and reheat.

boilerA conventional model contains cylinders and a tank but not a built-in heater. This option is common in larger homes that often use multiple faucets or water-using appliances at once.

Water Heaters

Water heaters warm water for household use, but they’re not heating sources. Their sole purpose is to heat potable water that you can then utilize for bathing, doing dishes, washing clothes, and other essential tasks. Unless you have a combination boiler, a water heater is a standalone unit separate from the boiler system.

There are different types of water heaters. A conventional system contains a tank, which holds and stores water heated by electricity or gas.

A tankless heater offers hot water on demand. When you turn on the tap, the unit warms water directly from the main line as it runs through the system.

Some water heaters use pumps, which draw heat from the ground, or solar power to warm water. These tend to be more eco-friendly because they don’t rely heavily on electricity or fossil fuels.
