Concrete is known for being one of the strongest building materials used in modern construction. It’s relied upon for various types of structures, from residential buildings to massive public works projects. Although it is extremely strong, it can crack, break, or shift over time. If you have a concrete patio that you’re trying to keep in excellent condition, the following guide outlines tips on how to preserve its appearance.

How to Preserve the Look of Your Concrete Patio

1. Use Sealant

After a crew has installed your concrete patio, apply a sealant to prevent corrosion, cracking, or chipping. After the initial coat, you’ll want to add another layer every two to three years to reinforce it.

Since this is a delicate process, most people rely on professionals to handle it. The entire patio has to be thoroughly cleaned and completely dry before the sealing solution is laid so that you don’t end up with air bubbles. You can apply additional layers as needed to protect the surface.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

When cleaning your patio, avoid caustic chemicals that can degrade the concrete. Even though this is one of the strongest building materials, heavy-duty chemicals that contain ammonium nitrates and sulfates can eat away at the material, causing lasting damage.

Laying deicing salts on sealed concrete during the winter has the same corrosive effect. Instead of using harsh cleaners, opt for natural treatments like baking soda, water, and vinegar.

3. Lay Down Rugs

Rugs add an extra layer of protection so that foods and drinks don’t fall directly on the concrete. Consider adding pads to the bottom of chairs and tables to prevent scratches as they’re moved.

4. Provide Cover

Like most building materials, concrete is prone to damage when exposed to the elements. Harsh sun, cold snow and ice, and other weather changes can cause the concrete to break down prematurely. Adding overhead coverage with awnings, outdoor umbrellas, or pergolas can protect the patio from the elements to keep it in top shape.
