Your fence is part of your home’s curb appeal. If the color is fading a bit, a fresh coat of paint or transparent stain can revitalize its appearance. These are two different processes, though, and you should know which one is right for your fence before picking up the supplies. Here’s what to know about each home improvement project.

Painting

Prepare your fence by sanding it lightly to get a smooth, clean surface. Apply a coat of primer for protection and longevity. Let it dry, then apply paint with a brush or roller.

You’ll likely need two or more coats for an even color. The fence will need to be touched up every five years or so.

Paint works on wood, vinyl, or metal fences. It does well on pressure-treated wood that struggles to absorb stains. You can choose any color, including a custom mix, to go with your home’s exterior scheme.

You can also select the finish, such as matte or glossy. While the type you use may vary, most will dry within a day or less, so you don’t have to worry as much about inclement weather and can perform this task any time of year.

Staining

paintFor transparent staining, clean the wood with a pressure-washer or with a rough brush and soapy water. Once it’s dry, apply the stain evenly with a brush, roller, or spray device.

It usually takes one or two coats, depending on how evenly you applied the first and how deep you want the color. Transparent staining has to be done when the weather will be free of rain and at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the next two days while it dries. The stain will need to be reapplied every two to three years to protect your wood and maintain a luscious color.

Transparent stain soaks into wood instead of sitting on its surface, so there’s less concern about drips and runs. It works well on woods like cedar, which can be damaged by other materials.

It’s available in different styles, such as clear or color-tinted, and it enhances the natural beauty of wooden fences. Stain won’t chip, peel, bubble, or scratch off, and it’s the best option if you want to maintain a rough or textured look on your fence, as you don’t have to sand it. Stain doesn’t usually require primer and takes less time to apply.
