Whether it's growing vegetables, flowers, or house plants, gardening is a terrific hobby to share with children. It teaches them responsibility, helps them learn to nurture a growing plant, and gets them out of the house and away from their screens. If you see the value in teaching your kids about gardening, below are some tips to get them interested in the subject.

How to Get Your Kids Interested in Gardening

1. Let Them Pick the Plants

Some types of greenery are more visually interesting to kids than others are. For interest, depending on your soil and whether you intend to grow indoors or outdoors, he or she may enjoy caring for a cactus, a Venus flytrap, a vegetable they enjoy eating, or something beautiful, like a rosebush or orchid.

You might even consider something exotic like euphorbia obesa, a flowering succulent known as "the baseball plant." To foster their interest, let your child select some of the seeds or seedlings for your gardening project.

2. Keep Them Involved

This gets boring quickly and could undercut their enthusiasm. Instead, encourage them to participate in each step, including planting, sprouting, fertilizing, pulling weeds, irrigating, pruning, and—if appropriate—harvesting and eating.

3. Garden Where They Play

Out of sight is out of mind, so keep the plants somewhere visible. Locate your garden in a spot where your child likes to spend time. Whether it's out in the yard near their swing set or on the windowsill of the playroom, make it easy for your kids to monitor progress, notice wilting or other problems, and generally be reminded of the project and its goals.
