Even though the weather is summer-like all year round in Hawaii, the winter season on the islands is when you’ll find your home more susceptible to a variety of pests. It seems that people aren’t the only creatures that like living here, but your home is no place for these invaders.

According to the pest and rodent control professionals at Maui-based Dick’s Fumigation Services, there are a few repeat offenders this time of year, and if you know how to identify them, you'll have a much easier time getting rid of them for good.

What pests should you look out for this winter?

  • Cockroaches: Even though there are an astonishing 19 different types of cockroaches in Hawaii, you’ll likely only encounter three: the American, German, and

Surinam subspecies. Most residences on the island require regular fumigation services to keep these sizable and resourceful pests at bay.

  • Centipede: Of the three types of centipedes found in Hawaii, only the scolopendra subspinipes, also known as the Giant Centipede, is known to bite humans. Contact with a Giant Centipede isn't fatal, but it's certainly painful. What’s especially frightening about this variety is that they can grow up to a foot long. No matter what kind of centipede you encounter in the home, they are unsightly and will emerge from under carpets and rugs.
  • AntsAnts: Ants aren’t actually native to Hawaii, but humans have (inadvertently) brought over 57 species. Though most species of ants aren’t dangerous to humans, they frequently invade homes throughout the islands and can become a nuisance.
  • Mice: Mice love to use homes as places to nest and procreate, and what’s more, they are incredibly resourceful when it comes to stealing your food. A mouse problem is also a hygiene problem, so it’s vital that they’re taken care of as soon as possible.

If any of these creepy-crawlies invade your home, give the folks at Dick’s Fumigation Services a call at (808) 244-7496 to schedule a consultation. As sneaky as these pests are, they’re no match for these fumigation pros. Learn more about this dedicated local service by checking out its website.
