Compared to cats and dogs, guinea pigs stand out among common household pets. These amazing animals are herbivores, which means they can’t eat meat. They should also be restricted from nuts, seeds, and oats, which have too many carbohydrates and fats for their digestive systems. If you’re wondering what foods your guinea pig should consume, take advantage of the following pet care guide.

3 Elements of a Healthy Guinea Pig Diet

1. Plenty of Vitamin C

Just like humans, guinea pigs can’t generate vitamin C. They need at least 10 to 50 mg of this nutrient per day to develop properly, heal from injuries, and fight off infections. In guinea pigs, vitamin C deficiency can lead to skin ulcers, swollen joints, diarrhea, and a rough coat. Your pet’s diet should include vitamin C-rich foods like kiwis and oranges, but this won’t be enough. Pet care professionals also recommended guinea pig pellets containing the vitamin or a liquid supplement.

2. Timothy Hay

Pet careWhile not all hay is healthy for guinea pigs, they can and should consume Timothy hay in unlimited amounts because it’s low in calcium. Hay is crucial for regulating the growth of bacteria in your pet’s intestinal tract. When they chew the plant, it also helps to grind down their teeth, which grow nonstop. If your guinea pig isn’t getting enough hay, your pet care professional might recommend hay-based pellets.

3. Fruits & Vegetables

In addition to hay and vitamin C supplements, the rest of your guinea pig’s diet should consist of fruits and vegetables. Professionals recommend leafy greens (not iceberg lettuce since it’s mainly water) such as kale, cilantro, romaine, and green or red leaf lettuce. They should also have access to bright-hued veggies like tomatoes, bell peppers, broccoli (occasionally and in small quantities), squash, and carrot tops. While they can enjoy kiwis, oranges, grapes, and other fruits, these should be given in small quantities to avoid an excessive amount of sugar.
