A well provides a clean and environmentally friendly water source for countless U.S. residents. These water supply systems are relatively low-maintenance for most of the year. However, special precautions are required before winter arrives to protect against frozen pipes and components that could result in burst plumbing and days without water. Use this guide to prepare your setup for the approaching cold season.

A Guide to Winterizing a Water Well

1. Perform a Well Inspection

Snow and ice can make it difficult to address well repairs. Before the ground freezes, inspect the water supply system for any issues that could cause a serious threat in the upcoming months. Pay close attention to the well casing and cap. If you notice any cracks or corrosion, schedule repairs immediately to prevent leaks and groundwater contamination.

2. Insulate the Pipes & Pressure Tank

water supply systemAlthough underground wells are largely protected from winter weather conditions, the above-ground plumbing and control systems are still susceptible to freezing. Low temperatures can lead to busted pipes, pump failure, and a ruptured pressure tank.

Prevent unnecessary damage by wrapping all exposed pipes with foam insulation and heat tape. Inside the well house, cover the walls, ceiling, and flooring with insulation, and seal all doors and openings to trap heat inside. Secure a water-heater blanket around the pressure tank with straps, and place a specially designed slipcover over the entire container. This will ensure the pressure switch, which is responsible for turning the pump on and off, is fully protected against freezing.

3. Cover & Drip Faucets

Continue to provide insulation to the system by covering all outdoor faucets to protect them from drastic temperature drops. Leave indoor taps turned on enough to allow for a mild drip. This will keep water moving throughout the pipes, reducing the likelihood of liquid freezing within them.
