Safety is vital when operating a vehicle, which is why each state lists laws that drivers must follow. For Ohio, these regulations include auto glass requirements, specifically for windshields. Below is a guide on what you need to know.

Damage & Obstructions

Ohio law requires that there are no obstructions on or around the windshield, including signs, posters, and anything else that is not transparent. Required vehicle stickers must be affixed to the lower right corner and cannot be larger than four inches by six inches.

Stickers cannot mask the vehicle identification number (VIN), and devices such as a GPS cannot obstruct the auto glass or the VIN in any way. Chips and cracks happen, and are not always avoidable, especially if another vehicle kicks up a rock and sends it sailing into your windshield.

auto glassOhio regulations state that cracks, chips, and defects directly in front of the driver violate the law, mainly because they interfere with visibility. Large cracks that can pose a hazard are prohibited no matter where they are.

Fines may be assessed for vehicles that aren’t compliant. When replacing auto glass, it must be made with the same quality as the original.

Wipers & Tinting

Wipers must be used in inclement weather to clear away precipitation for the driver’s line of sight. To prevent issues with wiper efficacy, have them replaced twice a year.

Ohio also has rules for tinting, including that it must be non-reflective, and greater than 70% of light must pass through the windshield. Front side windows must allow more than 50% of light to pass but any tint can be used on the backside and rear auto glass. Drivers must also have a sticker set between the window and the film, indicating that it follows the legal limits.
