While it's common practice to wash your hands frequently, most people don't regularly sanitize their phones, resulting in exposure to potentially dangerous bacteria. Not all mobile phones are created equal, however, and cleaning them can differ depending on your model. Whether you have a brand-new or used iPhone®, here’s a closer look at how to sanitize it.

iPhone 11 & Newer

While most iPhone devices have similarities in their components, dimensions, and screens, there are a few notable differences in the iPhone 11 and 12 models that require additional care.

Unlike previous generations, newer models feature textured matte glass finishes around their cameras that can harbor debris as well as bacteria. To reduce the risk of stains or buildup, it's important to clean your device immediately if it comes into contact with materials such as dirt, ink, acidic foods, cosmetics, or detergents.

Before cleaning your new or used iPhone, turn it off and unplug any connected cables. Wipe it clean using a soft, lint-free cloth. If debris accumulation or stains are present within the textured glass finish, moisten your lint-free cloth with warm, soapy water and apply gentle pressure.

Though the 11 and 12 feature water-resistant capability, it’s still wise to avoid getting moisture in any of the openings. To disinfect the surfaces, gently wipe the exterior of your phone, carefully avoiding any ports, with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes.

iPhone X & Older Models

used iPhone®The iPhone X and earlier models also feature an oleophobic, oil-repellent coating on the front and back to help your phone resist fingerprints. Harsh chemicals, such as window cleaners, aerosol sprays, and solvents, can damage this coating, leaving your screen vulnerable to scratches and possibly diminishing its touch response.

Wipe your early-generation iPhone clean with a soft, lint-free cloth, such as a lens cleaner, to remove stuck-on debris and oils. However, older devices are not nearly as resistant to water as late models—particularly prior to the X. For this reason, never wet the cloth when cleaning. Disinfect carefully with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes to significantly reduce the presence of germs.

Finally, no matter what phone keeps you tethered to the world, cut down on taking it to the bathroom with you to further boost its hygiene. Your phone spends a great deal of time being touched and held near your mouth, so mindfulness will keep your device sanitary and provide a health safeguard every day.
