One of the first decisions you’ll face when buying a boat is between dual- and center-console options. These popular designs are ideal for a variety of water activities. The unique layouts serve some water enthusiasts better than others, and understanding each will help you make the right decision for your watersport goals. Below is a helpful guide to use when browsing new and used boats for sale.

Dual Console

A boat’s console is the area where the steering, ignition, and other controls are located. Dual-console options are similar to standard cars. There’s a driver’s seat with the controls, a dividing walkway, and a passenger seat on the other side.

Dual-console vehicles are preferred for leisure boating. The larger, more open layout creates a broader framework for seating. There’s often a large bench behind the driver and passenger and rounded seating in front of the console. The added space also creates room for lounging and sunbathing.

boatThe dual design often includes a large fixed or retractable canopy that extends the vessel's entire width, providing more cover for guests. This is perfect for families with small children who need a break from the sun.

Center Console

Center consoles are located in the middle of the watercraft and have empty space on either side. This added room makes it easier to move around, resulting in a smoother sport fishing experience. Most options are even specifically advertised as fishing boats.

The center design allows anglers to move freely if they hook a large fish that resists being reeled in. More helm space also means more storage for fishing equipment and supplies.

However, even though center-console vehicles are optimal for fishing, they can still be used for leisure. Likewise, dual-console options can be used for fishing. Whichever one you choose, you won’t be limited to specific watersports.
