Vinyl records feature colorful gatefold artwork and have a warm, crackling sound that instills a sense of nostalgia. LPs have made a significant comeback over the past 15 years. If you’re a music lover, you likely own dozens of records by both classic and contemporary artists. As you prepare for residential moving, consult the following advice on how to pack and transport your collection safely.

3 Tips for Moving Vinyl Records

1. Replace the Outer Sleeves

Vinyl records slip into cardboard sleeves that usually have plastic casings around them to prevent the cover art from dulling and scratching. Swap out any thin plastic coverings for more durable, high-density polypropylene sleeves. These prevent records from rubbing against one another, fading, or becoming defaced while in transit.

2. Use the Right Boxes

residential movingMost LPs fit comfortably into medium-sized cardboard moving boxes, and those with built-in handles make for easier loading and unloading. Place the records in boxes upright, as though they were folders in a filing cabinet, to prevent excess weight from warping the cardboard or vinyl. Pack them in alphabetical order or by genre so that they’re easier to shelve once they arrive at your new residence.

3. Add Cushioning

If there’s extra space in the moving boxes, add packing peanuts, foam inserts, or plastic wrap to prevent records from moving and potentially breaking if the truck goes over a bump or has to stop abruptly. If you plan to stack the records atop one another, add extra padding to the tops and bottoms of each box.
