Pumps are designed to move fluids. First, they collect wastewater for water treatment. After this has been purified, the pump then shifts this treated water to its destination. For this purpose, there are two key varieties: centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, each of which offers unique advantages. Here’s what you need to know about these two devices.

Centrifugal Pumps

This commonly used water pump is designed to move fluid with kinetic energy. Spinning impellers are set in the water to create powerful rotational movement. The negative pressure draws water into the impeller, where it is then directed toward a specific destination and discharged.

Fluctuations may occur as certain types of fluid are pumped. Friction, for example, can cause some liquids to become viscous. The thicker the liquid, the slower the flow rate. As such, these pumps are usually used for thin substances, including purified water, seawater, and light fuel.

Positive Displacement Pumps

water treatmentPositive displacement water treatment pumps shuttle specific amounts of fluid from one area to another with the assistance of a piston instead of an impeller. For efficiency, the space where the water is suctioned expands while the destination cavity contracts. This process produces a smooth flow that creates varying degrees of pressure, allowing the water to move steadily.

Unlike centrifugal, positive displacement pumps maintain an even flow rate throughout the process, despite the pressure changes. They also tolerate viscosity efficiently. If the thickness of a fluid increases, for example, so does the flow. These systems typically move liquids like sewage and those containing a high amount of solids.
