It's common for RV owners to take the winter off from traveling. In such situations, moving the vehicle to RV storage clears up parking space and ensures it's secure while not in use. If you're planning to make the transition as well, follow these important steps.

5 Prep Steps for Winter RV Storage

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Even if you only used the RV a few times this year, cleaning should be a priority. Pests, like mice and ants, are attracted to even the most minimal amount of food residue. To prevent an infestation, remove all perishable items from the vehicle and wipe down every surface, including inside the refrigerator. Follow up by vacuuming the upholstery, seating, and floor to get rid of any crumbs.

2. Clear Out the Lines

Otherwise, the piping can freeze and burst, causing extensive damage. Flush out the tanks and lines, and then add antifreeze to prevent any leftover moisture from freezing.

3. Protect Your Tires

The last thing any RV owner wants is to deal with a flat tire or blow out in the spring. Exposure to the sun can wear down the rubber and cause weaknesses, such as cracking along your tires’ outer walls, so protect them by adding tire covers. Deflated spots can also be an issue, so park the vehicle on wood boards or raise it on blocks and remove tires completely while in long-term storage

4. Disconnect the Battery

To avoid draining the battery while the vehicle sits in RV storage, disconnect the wires or utilize the disconnect switch if available. Severely cold temperatures can drain batteries as well, so some owners may choose to remove the battery entirely. In such scenarios, it's important to charge it at least once a month throughout the winter to protect the core.

5. Cover It Up

UV rays can dry out and crack paint and seals. Adding a cover while your vehicle is in RV storage can protect the exterior. While a heavy-duty tarp works, there are also specially-designed RV covers available for most sizes and models. Just be sure to secure your cover correctly to block out wind gusts.
