Perhaps you’ve plotted your course with precision, or maybe you’re just seeing where the road takes you. No matter how you approach them, road trips are more affordable when you maximize your vehicle’s gas mileage. If you’re gearing up for the long haul, here’s how you can stretch the distance between gas stations on your trip.

3 Tips for Improving Gas Mileage on a Road Trip

1. Control Your Speed

You might be trying to reach your destination as soon as possible, and it can be tempting to drive fast to get there. Over the speed of 50 mph, however, fuel economy drops sharply.

In fact, for every 5 mph you drive over 50, you’ll wind up paying 15 cents more per gallon. Stay within the speed limit and accelerate gradually, and you may find yourself needing to stop at gas stations less frequently.

2. Check Your Tire Pressure

Consult your owner’s manual to figure out the optimal pressure for your tires. Many gas stations have air compressors where you can fill up on the road if needed.

3. Pack Light

For every extra hundred pounds in your vehicle, your fuel economy decreases by roughly 1%. If you’re driving a compact car, this percentage could be even higher, as extra weight affects smaller cars more. It’s a good idea to pack lightly for your trip. Avoid hauling any cargo on your roof, too, as these can hinder the aerodynamics of your car and reduce your fuel economy.
