The drain—or leach—field is one of the most important components of a septic system. After being separated in the tank, liquid waste is distributed into the field for natural filtration. Unfortunately, when an issue arises, it can compromise the functionality of the entire system. Here's how to identify if you have a problem.

3 Signs of Drain Field Failure

1. Lush Plant Life & Water Pooling

Tanks are designed to hold and break down solid waste. However, when there's an issue within the septic system, it can allow this matter to reach the drain field. Such situations pose a serious safety hazard as raw sewage can contaminate the soil and groundwater. Yet, it's one of the easiest problems to diagnose as the material also serves as a fertilizer to surrounding plant life.

Check the field regularly for brightly green or exceptionally lush grass and foliage. You may also notice pooling water on days of heavy water usage or precipitation.

2. Slow Drainage

As a result, outgoing material from the home exits at a slower rate. You're likely to notice sinks, showers, and bathtubs draining much slower than usual. Toilets may even need to be flushed multiple times.

3. Unpleasant Odor

Solid waste leaking into the drain field also causes odor. The extent of the foul smell depends on how much matter has made it through and the saturation level of the ground. Yet, even the slightest hint of sewage is cause for concern. In some cases, the waste can create a clog in the leach field pipes, inhibiting movement and causing an odor to rise from the drains indoors.
