Feeling nervous about the dentist is normal, particularly for children. Your pediatric dentist wants to give them the care they need while alleviating their anxiety in an unfamiliar environment. There are some steps you can also take to prevent their stress and build good oral hygiene habits.

How to Make Your Child More Comfortable at the Dentist

1. Start Early

Going in for an early check-up will familiarize the experience while ensuring that their teeth are developing. Most pediatric dentists recommend taking them in for their first appointment at around age 3, with follow-ups every six months.

2. Let Them Express Their Anxiety

Instead of telling your kids that the dental visit won’t be scary, listen to their concerns. Expressing themselves will make them feel validated, giving them control over the experience.

pediatric dentistChildren are naturally curious, so let them ask questions. You know what happens at the dentist’s appointment, but the experience will be new to your child. A dentist can explain what the tools are for and what to expect. The conversation will build rapport between your child and the dentist and help your little one feel more at ease.

3. Be Positive

Avoid using words with a negative connotation when you explain what happens at the appointment. If you say the exam “won’t be painful,” they’ll likely focus on the word “painful.” Use positive language and emphasize the benefits of seeing the dentist. You can further build positive associations with dental visits by giving your child a special reward, like a sticker, after their appointment.

4. Visit in Advance

If a child has been to the office before, they may be less nervous during their first appointment. Pediatric dentists know how anxious children can be, so they’ll introduce themselves on a pretend visit and make your little one feel welcome. Call ahead and ask whether the doctor or a member of the staff would give your child a tour of the clinic.
