Inside each tooth is a network of nerve and tissue chambers. Decay-causing bacteria can cause severe infections when they break into these areas, and root canal therapy is needed to save the tooth. The sooner you recognize symptoms, the better the outcome will be. Below are the most prominent signs of tooth decay and what to expect during treatment.

When to Schedule Root Canal Therapy

1. Pain

Root infections can cause constant pain. You may also be especially sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages or pain when putting pressure on the tooth. This is because the blood vessels and nerve tissue are inflamed.

To start, the dentist will enter the root chambers through the crown of the tooth. They’ll then remove the infected pulp and sterilize the chambers. To prevent future infections and strengthen the tooth, they’ll fill the hole with dental cement. Patients don’t always experience pain, however, which is why it’s important to recognize other symptoms.

2. Discoloration

Following a root canal procedure, your dentist will apply a crown to the affected tooth. This cap is a protective barrier against decay-causing bacteria. It also supports weaker teeth so they don’t have to be extracted. These crowns are made from a mold of your mouth and fit comfortably with adjacent teeth. They can last up to 15 years with proper care.

3. Chips & Cracks

Cosmetic damage may be the only sign of a root infection. Chips and cracks—even small ones—are common causes because they expose the root chambers. It’s crucial to see a dentist any time these happen so they can make sure an infection isn’t in progress.
