Keeping your home safe from burglars and intruders requires securing all points of entry—especially the garage. Garages are an attractive target for criminals, often full of valuable items and relatively easy to enter without being noticed. Taking a few simple steps to secure your garage door can keep your belongings and family safe.

How to Secure Your Garage Door Against Intruders

1. Hide the Remote

If the opener is in your car, secure it in the glove box or console, and be sure to lock your car behind you.

Another option is to use a key fob-style remote that stays on your keychain, or an app-controlled opener that requires you to use you smartphone to open the door.

2. Keep the Door Closed

Keeping your garage door closed when you aren’t outside is an effective way to stop break-ins. Leaving the door open when you aren’t home, or even just inside for a bit, gives potential thieves a clear view of what’s inside.

Locking the door each time you leave will thwart most criminals. You can even add an extra level of protection by applying a privacy film over the windows, so no one can see what’s inside the space.

3. Secure All Doors

Your garage likely has several doors, including an exterior service door and and an entry to your home. Always keep these doors locked because thieves will use them to access the garage. Once inside, they can easily open the main door and walk off with your belongings.

Exterior service doors may actually be more vulnerable to breach than your main garage door, since they are typically only secured with a standard lock. Such locks are no match for experienced thieves. Installing a deadbolt can keep intruders out and maintain your home secure.
