On a cold winter day, your furnace is instrumental in making your home warm and comfortable. However, to keep your system in working order, some HVAC maintenance is required. Here are a few critical do’s and dont’s for furnace maintenance.

Do:

Schedule a tune-up.

One of the best ways to maintain your furnace is by scheduling a professional tune-up. During seasonal HVAC maintenance, professionals will check furnace components that tend to wear down and break, such as belts, bearings, and components of the motor. Professionals can also check for blockages in the air intake, worn wires, or fuses that need to be replaced. If issues are present, technicians can repair your system early, preventing unnecessary breakdowns.

Replace the filter.

HVAC maintenanceForced-air furnaces are designed to circulate air over an electronic heating element or a heated chamber, and then redistribute that air throughout your home to boost the temperature.

Unfortunately, if the air is riddled with fine particulates like dust and dander, they can coat components and become lodged in ductwork, harming efficiency and damaging your system. Prevent these problems and improve indoor air quality by changing your furnace filter at least once every 90 days, or as soon as it is visibly dirty.

Don’t:

Perform DIY repairs.

While it’s safe to tackle basic HVAC maintenance tasks like programming your thermostat or replacing your air filter, it’s dangerous to attempt more involved furnace repairs, such as adjusting your pilot light or ignition system. If you suspect a big problem, such as leaking natural gas or an improperly firing furnace ignition, turn off your furnace and schedule an urgent HVAC service call.

Live with a faulty furnace.

Furnaces usually offer signs of trouble long before they suddenly stop working, so never ignore strange sounds or smells coming from your furnace. Noises, such as whirring or grinding could be signs of broken fan blowers or damaged belts, and strange smells, like burning dust, could signal dirty internal components. If you notice any changes with your furnace, schedule HVAC maintenance.
