My dentures are loose, my mouth hurts.

What do I do?

If you are a denture patient your gums are going to shrink. The denture is rigid and does not change, but, over time, your mouth does. Shrinkage of the gums can cause the denture to become loose. Along with this, your bone can also diminish.  This can cause your jaws not to align properly.  When this happens a denture that is loose can create sore spots. If your denture does not perform properly you can fracture denture teeth and possibly break the denture itself.  You can even develop stomach issues.  The look of your face can also be noticeable.

If you suffer from these issues, they must be addressed.  You need to see your dentist.  They can evaluate you and make the needed changes.  In some slight cases of gum shrinkage any commercially available denture adhesive works well.  If the shrinkage is more significant, the denture can be realigned to compensate for the space between your denture and your gum.  In other cases, especially if the denture teeth are noticeably worn and you have significant gum shrinkage, they may need to be remade.

Dentures can also be made more stable by having implants placed by a qualified dental professional.  The denture can be modified to have retentive areas that match with the implants.  Keep in mind that this can get expensive.

Even if you have been a denture wearer for many years you should maintain recall visits with your dentist to check the fit and do the needed adjustments.  Your dentist should also screen you for oral cancer.

Like seeing your physician on a regular basis, seeing your dentist regularly can ensure you maintain a healthy mouth, a properly functioning denture and a great smile.
