For anyone who has glasses, wearing a mask has presented a unique dilemma. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing masks to curb the spread of the coronavirus, doing so causes eyewear to fog up. This natural effect occurs when warm breath escapes the top of a mask and meets the cooler surface of the lenses, forming condensation. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to stay fog-free while still doing your part to minimize COVID-19.

How Do You Keep Glasses From Clouding When Wearing a Mask?

1. Try a Mask With an Adjustable Nose Bridge

Breath escapes a mask when it isn’t sitting flush against your face. Some masks have built-in, adjustable nose bridges. This style allows you to squeeze the strip to the shape of your nose for a tighter fit, preventing air from escaping and condensation from forming.

2. Pull the Mask Up

If you’re in a pinch and can’t find any masks with nose bridges, try adjusting the placement of the mask you do have. Move it further up your nose so the bottom of your glasses frames sit over the fabric. This should prevent any escaping air from hitting the lenses directly.

3. Use Soap & Water

Soap residue will leave a thin film on the lenses, which will act as a barrier against the condensation. Make sure the lenses don’t have any special coating that could react with the soap.

4. Purchase an Anti-Fogging Agent

If your eyewear can’t be washed, consult with an optometrist to find a product that can be used safely to prevent condensation. There are anti-fogging sprays and wipes available, and your eye doctor may be able to recommend a brand that will guard against cloudiness without damaging lens coatings.

5. Insert a Tissue Into Your Mask

Another trick to try in a pinch is placing a tissue inside the mask. Fold the tissue, then lay it along the bridge of your nose. The added fabric may catch any escaping moisture before it meets the surface of the lenses.
