Figuring out whether to repair or replace your air conditioner can be challenging when you want to get the most out of your current system. Here are some factors to consider when deciding between AC repairs and replacement.

Repair

If your air conditioning system is less than 10 years old, repairs are usually more cost-effective than a full replacement. New systems haven’t had time to wear out enough that they need replacing. Have your local HVAC technician do an inspection to figure out what needs repairs.

AC repairLikewise, if the cost of AC repair is less than half of the system’s total value or less than half of the cost of a replacement, it’s a smarter investment. The exception to this rule is if you regularly call for service. Needing frequent repairs indicates the system is on its last legs and could benefit from replacement.

Replace

When your energy bill increases each month, but the utility company hasn’t raised their rates, your system is working too hard to cool your home. This could be due to normal wear and tear or the age of your system. Regardless of the cause, your energy bill will keep increasing, so replace the unit to save on monthly expenses.

Older air conditioners typically use R-22 as their type of refrigerant. However, the U.S. government and the Environmental Protection Agency have found that a newer refrigerant, R-410A, is more environmentally friendly to the ozone layer. If you have an older system using R-22 coolant, replace your system with one that uses R-410A to help the environment. This will also save on the cost of coolant, as R-22 is being phased out and is harder to find.
