Drivers are expected to have some form of auto insurance to cover damage in case of an accident. There are many different types of coverage, and you may be unsure about which you should purchase. Here are some common types of car insurance to consider when choosing a policy.

Common Auto Insurance Policies

1. Liability Coverage

This is the most basic form of auto insurance and is required in most states. It covers damage that you may have caused and are responsible for. This type of coverage comes in two forms: bodily injury liability and property damage liability. The former helps you cover medical and legal fees that may arise if you caused an accident that injured another person. The latter assists you in paying for damage you caused to someone’s vehicle, fence, mailbox, or other property. While this insurance covers damage you caused to someone else’s vehicle, it will not help you pay for your car’s repairs if it is damaged in an accident.

2. Collision Coverage

3. Comprehensive Coverage

This type of auto insurance pays for damage sustained by your vehicle outside of a collision or auto-related accident, including hail damage, vandalism, fallen trees, and storm damage. You may want to consider this coverage if you live somewhere prone to heavy storms or natural disasters. It’s usually optional but, like collision coverage, may be required by car rental or lending services.

4. Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Even though most states require some form of liability insurance, not all drivers obey the law. If you are in an accident and sustain damages from someone without auto insurance, having this type of coverage will help cover some or all of the costs. It can also cover the difference if you need to work with someone who has insurance but has a policy that won’t cover all damages.
