A hutch consists of a set of shelves stacked on top of a cabinet. It can be a great place to store your dishware or add design elements to your home. Here are some tips for using one and making it your own.

How to Design & Organize Your Hutch

1. Choose a Theme

Your hutch puts items like your favorite set of china or dishware on display, so it should have a visually cohesive theme. Add variety with other items, such as candlesticks, boxes, vases, pitchers, or figurines.

You don’t have to put the hutch in the kitchen. If you put it in your office, for example, you can showcase your awards, clocks, artwork, or photos.

2. Divide the Spaces

cabinetsTreat each shelf as a distinct zone. Create individual displays that complement each other while still being unique. Repeat colors, shapes, and sizes both inside each zone and across the entire hutch.

Some people like to divide each shelf by purpose, weight, and frequency of use. For example, teacups and saucers might be stored together on one high shelf, while soup terrines and platters might occupy lower ones.

3. Minimize Clutter

It’s tempting to use hutch shelves as catch-all storage spaces. Too many items, however, can lead to a disorganized and visually unappealing result.

If you’re having a hard time eliminating objects, take everything down to get a clear view. Keep pieces that you feel proud to display. Store less attractive items in the base cabinet or donate them.

4. Include Storage Solutions

Your hutch should be functional. Organize your cabinets using small bins to keep items together. Use silverware organizers to keep drawers neat. To create more room, hang cups and mugs from under-mount hooks. If you want to display plates upright, buy stands or metal easels.
