A new roof is an exciting upgrade to any home’s exterior. When you’ve finally settled on a shingle style and set a date for installation, the last step is to prepare your home for the start of the project. Use the following guide to get your home ready for a new roof.

How to Get Ready for a Roof Installation

1. Prep the Exteriors

Tending to the exterior of a home is the most involved step in the preparation process. Start by pruning away overgrown vegetation surrounding the home that can interfere with the roofers’ work. Remove personal items, like outdoor furniture, toys, play structures, garden pots, bikes, and outdoor lighting that could be damaged by fallen debris.

Consider covering any gardening with tarps or staked sheets to protect plants from loose shingles or other roofing materials. Move any vehicles out of the driveway or garage to avoid damage and give the crew room to work and unload equipment.

2. Corral Children & Pets

new roofMake the yard off-limits to kids and pets until the project is finished. Some families may be more comfortable staying with family or friends while their roofs are being replaced to ensure kids and pets are not constantly underfoot.

If your kids are still small, making babysitting arrangements will ensure the periodically loud roofing work doesn’t disturb your little ones. Pets that are uncomfortable around strangers or unfamiliar noises may also need to stay at a friend’s or family member’s house during the day.

3. Be a Nice Neighbor

A new roof is positive news for your neighbors, as a boost in curb appeal benefits the whole neighborhood. However, before the project begins, give the neighbors a heads up on the start date and time frame. This courtesy will allow them to make their own preparations, if necessary

4. Prepare Inside

A quality roofing company will keep interior disruptions, like dust and noise, to a minimum during a roof installation. However, it is beneficial to prep inside of a home for this project. Temporarily remove art, photos, and other wall hangings from upstairs rooms so nothing falls during the installation. As a precaution, consider removing glass sconces on light fixtures, as well.
