5 Signs of Engine Damage 

1. Unsteady Power 

A car with an engine problem may have trouble going uphill, maintaining high speeds, or even sitting idle without shaking and shuddering. This could be due to worn spark plugs or ignition coils, which can simply be replaced. However, the damage could be deeper. An engine tune-up may be necessary. 

2. Odd Sounds 

When an engine's pistons, bearings, and other components are in poor shape, they'll create knocking sounds while the engine is running. This usually means that it's nearing the end of its lifespan. You'll need engine repair or replacement if you don't want your car to break down while you're driving. 

3. Abnormal Exhaust 

The exhaust from your vehicle should be thin and lightly colored. Any other color typically suggests an engine problem. Grey exhaust hints at low-quality transmission fluid, a faulty PCV valve, or excess oil usage. White exhaust happens when there’s a coolant leak.

Blue exhaust means that some of the engine parts are damaged, especially the valve seals or piston rings, which may be due to inadequate lubrication. Black exhaust is a sign that it’s burning more fuel than necessary. 

4. Fluid Leaks 

If your oil tank has been punctured, it will leak oil onto the ground beneath your car. Sweet, foul, or burning odors also point to leaks, usually from the coolant or oil tanks. Either way, your vehicle isn't getting the fluids it needs to keep running smoothly and without damaging other components.

5. Poor Consumption 

Perhaps you're accustomed to getting gas once a week. If you notice that you need to stop at a gas station more often, your engine may not be using fuel as efficiently as usual. Sometimes, your car simply needs an oil change, but it could also indicate a more serious problem, like bad injectors, sensors, or spark plugs.
