Laundry detergent is essential to getting your clothing clean and fresh. Yet, you may be unsure of how much to use when running a load. Here’s what to know before making your next trip to the laundromat.

What Happens if You Use Too Much Detergent?

Not using enough soap makes it challenging to remove stains and odors from clothing. For that reason, many people tend to add far more than needed. However, too much laundry detergent actually has the opposite effect.

When excess cleaning solution is added, the washing machine is unable to wash all of it away. The remaining residue leaves a film that can cause skin irritation, as well as a stiff or sticky feeling. Over time, you may also notice your clothing becoming dull and faded from the build up of soap.

How Much to Use

laundromatThe necessary amount of detergent is based on a variety of factors, including detergent type (e.g. high efficiency), water quality, load size, and the specific machine. In general, a standard single load requires around 2 tablespoons of liquid solution or 1/3 cup of powder detergent at 2X concentration.

Adjust the number based on the directions highlighted on the soap packaging. Also, be sure to only pack the washing machine 3/4 of the way full to ensure enough moveable space for a thorough clean.

Super-capacity commercial washers can take on multiple loads at once — up to eight. However, they seldom need eight times the laundry detergent.

Instead, two to three times as much is usually sufficient. The laundromat may have suggested detergent usages posted for each type of machine. If not, ask the attendant for a recommendation.
