For many people, artwork is both a passion and an investment, so it makes sense to keep the pieces safe in storage. There are numerous ways a piece of art can get damaged and lose its value, but if you follow these helpful tips, you can rest easy knowing yours is safe while in a unit.

5 Artwork Storage Tips

1. Clean the Artwork

Wipe paintings with a microfiber cloth or dry soft paintbrush to gently remove dust. This step prevents small particles from scraping the surface while in the unit.

Protect wooden frames from the elements by applying a quality polish, and rub metal pieces with a small amount of oil to reduce the risk of rust.

2. Wrap It Up

Wrap the artwork in foam, tissue paper, or breathable sheets that protect it from bugs, dust, and sunlight while still allowing air to circulate.

Never wrap any pieces in bubble wrap or plastic because they trap moisture and lead to water damage. To support canvas-backed paintings, place sturdy cardboard or wooden boards on the back.

3. Make an Inventory

StorageBefore placing any items in a unit, create a document to track the pieces. A digital spreadsheet is an easy inventory management tool, especially if the stored collection often fluctuates, so you can update it frequently. Include the name of each piece and its estimated value.

Bring the spreadsheet with you when you visit the unit to monitor what’s inside. It will also help with insurance claims if any items are damaged or go missing.

4. Don’t Stack Artwork

The weight of stacked artwork will likely stretch or rip the bottom pieces. Instead, stack them vertically in order of smallest to biggest. Between each item, place a layer of felt, foam, or cloth to let them breathe better.

Use shelves or place the pieces on wooden pallets or slats to keep them off the floor, which will promote better airflow and reduce the risk of water damage.

5. Maintain a Steady Climate

Fluctuating temperatures can warp, crack, and fade artwork, and high humidity levels increase the risk of mold damage. To keep your collection safe, find a storage facility that offers climate-controlled units. Keep the humidity at 40–50% with temperatures between 70–75 degrees Fahrenheit.
