Most people know that brushing and flossing are necessary for oral health. However, mouthwash can also freshen your mouth and prevent decay when done in addition to these care steps and biannual cleanings from your dentist. If you choose to rinse your mouth with this product, here are a few basic tips to ensure you’re using it correctly.

Do:

Check the formula.

Different mouthwash formulas offer various benefits. Some are designed to whiten your teeth, while others work to prevent cavities and minimize foul breath. Your dentist may recommend one formulated for sensitivity if you experience discomfort when you eat and brush.

Read product guidelines.

Don’t skip the instructions on the bottle. Most mouthwashes should be swished around your mouth for approximately 30 to 60 seconds. Some may also direct you to use a certain amount.

Don’t:

Skip your routine.

dentistWhile using mouthwash is important, it doesn’t serve as a substitute for brushing and flossing. At a bare minimum, you should commit to brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once to remove stubborn particles between the teeth. Rinsing helps mitigate any remaining bits, and may provide other benefits, but it can’t effectively clean your mouth by itself.

Eat or drink after rinsing.

To reap the greatest benefits from the product, avoid eating or drinking for at least half an hour after you rinse your mouth. This is particularly important if the product contains fluoride. This ingredient strengthens teeth and prevents cavities and gum disease, and it’s vital that you don’t rinse it away.
