If you are planning a kitchen remodeling project, you might have to prioritize where to invest your money. New countertops can transform the look of this space while making it more sanitary and easier to maintain. When discussing your project with a remodeling contractor, below are a few high-end countertop materials to consider.

What Are Your Options for Luxurious Kitchen Countertop Materials?

1. Engineered Quartz

Made of quartz crystals and polymer resin, engineered quartz mimics the look of natural stone and is available in colors ranging from white to dark brown. Unlike natural stone, however, quartz isn’t porous, which means spills and other residue won’t seep into the material and cause permanent stains.

Quartz has a seven rating out of 10 on the Moh's Scale of Mineral Hardness. This means you can cut directly on the counters without leaving nicks, cuts, and deep scrapes behind. Excessive heat can damage the surface, so put hot cookware on oven mitts or trivets to prevent premature wear.

2. Butcher-Block

These are made of thick cuts of wood that serve as durable slabs for food preparation, as you can cut directly on the surface. Treating the wood will boost its heat-resistant nature and ability to repel water. Apply a coat of mineral oil on occasion to prevent the wood from drying out.

3. Copper

If you prefer the look of metal, consider copper counters. Although surfaces can be sealed to keep stains and scratches off the metal, it’s still best to use a cutting board to prevent nicks and scrapes from breaking through the seal. Keeping hot cookware off the metal will also prevent warping.

Using household glass or stainless-steel cleaners will remove grime buildup. Some copper surfaces have antimicrobial alloys to keep germs at bay. Similar to hardwood floors, copper counters become more striking with age. As the metal slowly oxidizes, it will form a dark red or green patina.
