Protecting your auto restoration project should be a top priority throughout the year. However, winter storage is particularly significant, as it can present risks that may surprise you. Below are several strategies that will ensure that your classic car remains in the best shape throughout the cold months.

A Guide to Winter Classic Car Storage

1. Inflate the Tires

Cars that remain stationary for long periods can develop permanent flat spots on under-inflated tires. The only way to fix this is to replace the tires, which can be expensive for older vehicles. Cold temperatures cause the rubber to contract and harden, creating permanently warped areas. You can prevent this by inflating the tires to counteract the drop in pressure that occurs from the temperature change.

2. Wash & Wax

Also, make sure to get underneath the fenders, and use a protectant spray to prevent corrosion on chrome parts. Treat any interior leather with conditioner, and use a rubber seal to avoid cracks. Finally, add a dust cover so that dirt and water do not accumulate.

3. Change the Oil

If your car will be in storage for more than a month, replace the oil. This prevents the lubricant from becoming sludge, which will damage engine components when you try to drive it later. Even if you changed the oil recently, you should do so again to remove contaminants that accumulate while driving.

4. Add a Fuel Stabilizer

While you may think you should drain the fuel tank before storing a car, unless you empty the entire fuel line, some gasoline will always remain in the vehicle. This fuel can react with air and solidify, settling in engine components and causing corrosion to form inside of the tank.

Instead, fill the tank with fresh fuel and add a stabilizer to prevent issues from the cold weather. Drive the car for a few minutes after adding the stabilizer to ensure the fuel reaches the carburetor and injectors.
