Porcelain veneers are custom-made shells placed over your teeth to improve their appearance and protect against future damage. They’re often used to treat teeth that are worn, chipped, or misaligned. Porcelain is superior to other materials because it’s reflective, which helps it closely resemble natural teeth. Before upgrading your smile with veneers, learn more about how to keep them sparkling for years to come.

How Should You Maintain Your Porcelain Veneers?

Having veneers doesn't mean you’re freed from your standard dental hygiene regimen. Continue to brush twice a day and floss once a day, as recommended by the ADA.

Although your hygiene technique might stay the same, you'll likely need to change some of the products you use. Porcelain is easily damaged by abrasive materials, so if you use a hard-bristled toothbrush, switch to a softer one.

Similarly, stay away from toothpaste that has a gritty texture. Consider switching to a whitening toothpaste to help your natural teeth stay the same color as your veneers. If you use mouthwash, switch to an alcohol-free option that won’t weaken the bonding agent holding your veneers in place.

What Foods & Drinks Should You Avoid?

porcelain veneersPorcelain veneers create a bright smile, but it won't stay that way unless you chew and sip responsibly. Porcelain is at least as strong as your regular teeth, but you should still avoid chewing on hard substances like hard candies and ice. They damage porcelain and enamel alike, thus making chips and cracks more likely.

Porcelain veneers aren't as porous as regular teeth, and they're sealed with a protective coating. For this reason, they're largely stain-resistant. Over time, though, the protective coating will wear away, making them more susceptible to damage. It's best to minimize consumption of staining foods and drinks like coffee, red wine, and berries—and brush as soon as you can after indulging in them. Doing so will also ensure your real teeth don't turn a different shade than your veneers.
