If you’re planning to install an in-ground swimming pool, fiberglass and vinyl are among the top options. Both offer distinct advantages, so the right one for you depends on your specific vision and needs. Use the following guide to help you make the right decision for your property.

What Are the Differences Between Fiberglass & Vinyl Swimming Pools?

Fiberglass

Fiberglass pools are manufactured upside down from molds and feature several layers. In addition to multiple layers of chopped and laid woven roving fiberglass, they also include vinyl ester and gel coat layers to fortify the molds and create attractive finishes. The final gel coat layer features low porosity to significantly reduce algae growth since the organisms cannot attach to this material and spread.

They also provide a variety of customization options, including numerous gel coat colors and ceramic tile embellishments. They easily accommodate features such as pool lights and hot tubs, as well.

If features such as waterfalls and spas are important to your pool project, fiberglass is a great option. They also work well with saltwater because they don’t have a liner that would be subject to salt-related deterioration.

Vinyl

Vinyl pools feature liners separate from their foundations. The selected area is dug out and filled with a concrete-like mixture made of portland cement and vermiculite that creates the floor and walls. Once the mixture has cured, the liner is hung using special vacuums that prevent air bubbles and wrinkles.

While fiberglass pools have limited shape and size options because they are made from molds, vinyl swimming pools offer infinite installation possibilities. They also feature non-porous surfaces, but their liners require extra care to avoid punctures and holes.

Opt for a vinyl pool if a custom shape is important, and you plan to use chlorine or bromine to sanitize the water. These installations require more time to install and can take up to eight weeks. Keep this in mind if your project has a specific deadline.
