Orchids are known for their colorful and fragrant blooms, often found adorning Hawaiian lei, providing the scent in perfumes, and compounded in medicines. While they might seem difficult to grow, it only takes loving care and knowledge to produce beautiful blooms.

Background on the Phalaenopsis Orchid

orchids-hawaiiThis orchid is the most recognizable as it’s often seen in big box store and garden centers.  When selecting a plant from your local store or nursery, look for one with strong, erect stems covered with dark green leaves. They should never look brown, wilted or wobbly.

There are various species from which to choose, but we recommend starting with the Phalaenopsis, or moth orchid. The beginner-friendly plant is suited to most home environments. It comes in many colors, blooms are long lasting, and can rebloom easily if well cared for.

Basic Care & Growing Conditions

Phalaenopsis orchids can handle low light conditions although the most ideal would be an area with filtered morning sun and afternoon shade.  Do not place these plants in direct sunlight. Yellow, brown, or black-spotted leaves mean it’s receiving too much sun.

Watering once to twice a week is usually sufficient.  Do this by thoroughly running water over the pot.  Always let the water drain from the pot.  Wait until the top of the media feels dry to the touch to water again.  Orchid roots do not like to sit in water.  Phalaenopsis roots are thicker and they like to crawl outside of the pot.  This is completely normal.

As the Phalaenopsis orchid grows, it will produce new leaves from the crown of the plant growing vertically.  The new flower stems will emerge in between the base of the leaves.  While in bloom, do not repot your plant.  Repotting while flower buds are forming or blooming could cause the buds to drop.
