If you and your partner are trying for a baby, you want to do your part to improve the likelihood of conception. Following these best practices on their own or to supplement infertility treatments will improve your own fertility.

Do:

Consume more antioxidants.

Studies have found that men who consume healthy levels of antioxidants have a lower percentage of defective sperm than those who don’t. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause oxidative stress and affect the sperm. Eat leafy green vegetables and fruits to get folic acid, tomatoes and apricots for lycopene, and brazil nuts for selenium.

Exercise regularly.

infertility treatmentsRoutine exercise can increase both sperm count and motility as well as reproductive hormone levels, as found in a study that had men perform an aerobic exercise program with three 50-minute sessions each week. On the other hand, being overweight can reduce sperm count, so maintaining a healthy BMI is essential for conception.

Don’t:

Smoke.

Smoking tobacco has been found to reduce sperm count, motility, and quality, especially for moderate to heavy smokers. Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest that smoking may put your child at a greater risk of birth defects. If you currently smoke, cut back or quit altogether.

Drink excessively.

Like smoking, excessive alcohol and drug usage has been linked to a reduced sperm count. Avoid all drug substances. While it’s ideal to stop drinking altogether while you’re trying to conceive, up to two drinks a day is considered a moderate amount of alcohol for men.
