Hardwood flooring adds classic beauty and elegance to the home. However, the material may be vulnerable to developing scratches over time. Fortunately, you can take the following steps to minimize these blemishes.

How to Prevent Scratches on Hardwood Floors

1. Avoid Common Culprits

Exposure to some everyday objects can unwittingly cause scratches on the wood. These can accumulate over time and slowly take away from the pristine appearance of your flooring.

Both footwear and furniture are some of the most common culprits. While you can place furniture on the wood, use pads underneath the legs to create a protective barrier. If you need to move the furnishings, pads will prevent them from damaging the floor.

Shoes with potentially damaging features, like cleats or heels, can also scratch the hardwood. Try to get in the habit of taking your shoes off at the door, and use area rugs in spots with heavy foot traffic.

2. Watch Your Pets

Even walking your dog regularly can help “file” the claws down enough to limit scratching. If there are areas that your pets specifically love, consider keeping a rug there for protection.

3. Clean Floors Regularly

Dust and dirt tend to accumulate on flooring over time. Minuscule gritty contaminants can easily cause small scratches to develop.

Make a habit of cleaning the floors regularly to prevent these from collecting on the surface and potentially causing imperfections. You can mop hardwood flooring lightly, but don’t leave the material sopping wet; any scratches that exist may invite moisture inside and lead to swelling and damage. Otherwise, regular sweeping is sufficient for cleaning.
