In a place like Montana, RVs are typically only used during the warmer months. Unless you happen to have an RV pad on your property, that means finding a reputable RV storage facility for your vehicle during the colder months. Before leaving your vehicle for the season, make sure to follow the tips below.

3 Tips for Storing an RV

1. Ensure Adequate Ventilation

While you should certainly seal up your vehicle, poor air circulation will let mold and mildew thrive if any moisture is present. Therefore, it’s advisable to install covers that keep rain and snow out so that you can leave the rooftop vents open while the RV sits in storage. For added protection, don’t close the nighttime shades. Instead, draw only the translucent daytime shades so that sunlight can still get in, making it harder for mold to thrive.

2. Prep the Exterior

RV storageWash the vehicle thoroughly to eliminate dust, dirt, and debris, and then wax it to provide a protective coating from the elements. While you work, inspect all the seams and seals closely, especially those lining the roof. Replace any cracked or damaged rubber or caulking before storing the RV for the winter so that the wear and tear won’t spread while the vehicle sits all season long.

3. Disconnect All Batteries

The RV storage facility may give you a list of steps to take before leaving the vehicle there for an extended period of time. However, if they don’t, it’s still up to you to disconnect all the electrical systems. Doing so may be as simple as flipping the battery disconnect switch, but check the owner’s manual to confirm.

Just make sure all the batteries are fully charged first so that they can withstand the low temperatures without sustaining damage. Partially charged batteries are more inclined to freeze.
