Hardwood flooring adds function and aesthetic value to indoor spaces, whether you install it in the living room, bedroom, or dining area. However, it requires routine maintenance to remain durable and beautiful over the years, especially in areas that receive considerable foot traffic. Below is more information about what you should and shouldn’t do to maintain your hardwood floors.

Do:

Use floor protectors.

Near every entrance, place a mat so that people can wipe their shoes off before walking across the hardwood. This will protect it from scuffs and scratches due to debris. Then, add runners to hallways and area rugs to living areas to soften the space and prevent pets from damaging the wood.

Additionally, attach felt pads to the bottoms of table and chair legs. This will keep them from leaving scratches when you move the furniture around.

Sweep regularly.

To avoid this, sweep at least once per week to remove debris and prevent scratches. Since regular brooms have tough bristles than can scratch wood, use a dry dust mop.

Don’t:

Mop the floors.

Using water with a mop will remove the finish from hardwood, causing it to become dull and discolored. Hot water is especially damaging, as it absorbs into the wood more quickly. Excessive moisture can even allow the wood to rot and invite mold growth, so avoid applying liquid cleaners to the surface.

Scrub stains.

If wine or coffee stain your wood floors, don’t try to scrub it with abrasive pads or steel wool. Doing so will scratch the floor and cause more significant damage than the stain. Instead, apply mineral oil to the area, and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then, use a soft cloth to buff out the stain gently.
