If you have been looking into saving energy, especially with your HVAC system, you may have heard about a SEER rating for the unit. Below is a guide on what this number means for your AC installation.

What Is a SEER Rating & Why Is It important?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and describes how much energy a unit will use over one year. It is calculated by taking the output measured over a typical season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time. The SEER rating, then, means the maximum efficiency your HVAC will have.

The higher the number, the better the efficiency, and the more you will save in energy costs each month. As the rating number gets higher, the system is using less energy to maintain the comfortable atmosphere in your home. Different regions with varying climates will have different minimum requirements, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE) standards. The required rating will vary, with the minimum in the north usually being lower than the south.

The minimum rating for an AC installation is 13, but Energy Star® qualified units must have a 14.5. The highest rating is 25.

The benefits of a good SEER rating include better all-around comfort, no matter the weather. Most AC installations with higher ratings will be equipped with a variable-speed compressor and blower that alter depending on your needs. This also lowers humidity for ideal inside comfort and prevents hot and cold spots since the unit adjusts when necessary.

How Does a SEER Rating Save Energy?

a/c installationThere are a few factors that affect the SEER rating and how much energy you will save. Where you are located as well as the size of your home will affect the number. Your insulation can also determine the energy output. Since the SEER determines the maximum efficiency, taking all of these characteristics into account will help you save the most energy.

Make sure your unit is sized properly for your home and usage. Check that the ductwork is sealed so that no energy seeps out and that your home is properly insulated. This includes repairing drafty windows and doors and ensuring that attic and crawlspace insulation is at the right level to prevent energy from escaping.
