Your home is one of the few environments you can control when seeking allergy relief. In addition to professional cleaning services, regular dusting, carpet cleaning, and minimizing moisture are a few ways to help you breathe easier around the house. Here are some housekeeping tips for people with allergies.

How to Practice Housekeeping if You Have Allergies

1. Dust Every Week

Dust accumulates on virtually every surface in your house. It can easily become airborne and trigger allergy symptoms.

A broom can be used to sweep up large messes, but you should also use a dust wipe on your hard floors weekly to pull up the remaining dirt.

2. Wash Sheets Frequently

Bedding and linen accumulate allergens, like hair, pollen, and dust mites. Wash your bedding at least once a week using a fragrance-free detergent and hot water. You may need to wash the sheets more often if you own pets who sleep with you at night.

Avoid hanging them to dry outside, as this can attract pollen and other outdoor allergens. Vacuum your comforter at least twice a week and your mattress cover every month to remove debris.

3. Prioritize Carpet Cleaning

Your carpet experiences a lot of foot traffic, and its thick fibers easily accumulate dirt, debris, and dander. Vacuum all floors at least once a week. You may need to clean more often if you have pets, small children, or frequent allergy flareups.

Regularly empty and clean the vacuum filters to ensure efficiency. Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter when possible or double bag your vacuum.

4. Minimize Moisture

Mold and mildew are two allergens that thrive in high-moisture environments like bathrooms and basements. Wipe down floors and walls after showering and keep doors and windows open so that the room can air out. Make sure attics and basements have adequate airflow, and install a dehumidifier if they don’t.
