If you’re decorating the home’s exterior for the holidays, you’re probably adding a few fixtures to the fence. Although the boundary is stable, there are a few factors to consider before attaching anything to the railings. Here are a few tips to help you plan and execute a beautiful outdoor scene for the season.

How to Add Holiday Decorations to Your Fence

1. Create a Strategy

Before purchasing decorations, think about what you want the fence to look like. For example, colorful string lights and cartoon characters add childlike whimsy to the scene.

If you opt for these decorations, make sure the wires on the lights match the railing’s color to create a clean, seamless look. Anchor any inflatables to the fence with zip ties, and sand wooden areas to prevent accidental splinters.

2. Consider the Weather

railingIf your neighborhood receives ample rain, hail, and snow, use water-resistant or waterproof outdoor fixtures so that they don’t short-circuit from moisture intrusion. You should also use durable mounts and fasteners to attach the decorations securely. This will prevent the design from adjusting or blowing away in the wind.

3. Drape Garlands Correctly

Although they’re a key part of any festive holiday design, garlands can look sloppy if they aren’t draped and secured correctly. Practice draping with a long rope to create a plan before attaching the greenery.

Rely on the fence’s posts as a guide so that the garland’s peaks are evenly spaced. Use green wire or colored zip ties to discreetly secure the peaks to the railing. Put big, red bows to the peaks to cover the fence attachments and add an extra touch of holiday cheer. Be sure to use a durable, waterproof material, so the bows hold their shapes in the snow.

If your fence is looking a little weak, it may not be able to hold up the holiday decorations. To avoid redoing your design, get a new fence installed by the team at T & L Services in Eagle River and Anchorage.
