Engineered hardwood floors offer the timeless look of natural wood with minimal maintenance requirements. They feature several layers of material, which makes them moisture-resistant. If you’ve recently had them installed, here’s how to make them last for decades.

How to Clean Engineered Hardwood Floors

Keep your flooring pristine with a microfiber mop and cleaning products specifically designed for wood. Avoid using ammonia, oil-based products, and vinegar, which can dull the finish. Oil deposits also attract dirt and insects. Never apply any product with steel wool to prevent scratches.

Once a month, apply a specialized wood cleaner to the floor according to label instructions. Go over the area with a damp mop to eliminate residue and dirt. Remove any excess water with a clean, dry towel to prevent staining.

How to Deal With Scratches

If you find scratches, it’s possible to remove them. First, sweep away loose debris, then wipe the area with a damp washcloth. Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to dislodge debris from the scratch before filling it with paste or liquid floor wax. Apply the product with a putty knife, and remove excess with the flat end of the tool. Seal the surface with polyurethane or varnish using a natural-bristle brush.

Professional refinishing is also an option, but only if the top wood layer is thicker than ⅜ of an inch. Flooring with a top layer that’s over ¾ of an inch thick can undergo refinishing several times.
