Fall might bring to mind images of cuddling under a blanket with a warm drink at home, which is lovely. However, it’s also a wonderful time to travel. Taking a few days for a road trip is the perfect way to appreciate the unique autumnal scenery in regions near New York if you know where to go. In fact, consider a few ideas in particular that could become the highlights of the season this year.

Where to Plan Road Trip Destinations This Fall

1. Northwest Connecticut

If you want easy access to a number of historical and hiking sites all in a row, Connecticut’s 100 miles of covered bridges is the perfect solution. Looping throughout the northwestern area of the state, the bridges are breathtaking in their own right but will also take you to other amazing places.

For example, you can see the White Flower Farm, Lake Waramaug State Park, and even part of the Appalachian Trail. Stop at the Town of Falls Village in Canaan, too, so that you can experience what that part of the country was like in the 19th century.

2. New England

travelWith its rich history, New England promises plenty of fascinating adventures. First, travel to the Freedom Trail in Boston, which you can explore while admiring the colorful foliage for two and a half miles. It also features important historical sites that you can tour, such as the Park Street Church, the King’s Chapel and Burying Ground, the Old Corner Bookstore, the Bunker Hill Monument, and at least a dozen more.

You can further broaden your historical knowledge by visiting Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum in Northampton, Massachusetts. After that, enjoy more rural foliage in the Berkshires region in the same state.

3. Pennsylvania

To further appreciate fall scenery, travel to Route 6 in Pennsylvania, which features gorgeous mountains and forests. There’s also the 76-mile Elk Country Loop and all its incredible lookout points and towns. It can take prospective campers and hikers to Worlds End State Park to stay in cabins or tents and hike the Loyalsock Trail.

If you want to top off your vacation with some special drinks, go to St. Marys to try the handcrafted beer that’s been famously served by the Straub Brewery since 1878. For those who prefer other foods, consider getting hand-dipped ice cream at the Old Bull Cafe in Benezette or pizza at Weedville’s eponymous Weedville Hotel.
