Once you have your first cosmetic surgery scheduled, you may feel excited and nervous. To calm your nerves and ensure the procedure goes as smoothly as possible, take these steps to prepare.

Do:

Arrange for a ride.

If you have an outpatient procedure, you shouldn’t drive yourself home. You will be a little disoriented as the anesthetic wears off, so you shouldn’t operate heavy machinery. Ask someone to give you a ride home. Ideally, ask them to stick around during your initial recovery period to help out with cooking and cleaning.

Come dressed appropriately.

Remove all piercings and jewelry before heading to the surgery center. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to take on and off, such as sweatpants, leggings, and a loose, button-down shirt.

Don’t:

Eat or drink.

cosmetic surgeryAnesthesia temporarily stops your body’s reflexes, including the gag reflex, so eating or drinking beforehand may result in vomiting or choking during the procedure. Don’t eat or drink anything besides water for at least 12 hours or after midnight before your cosmetic surgery. If your surgeon gives you any other directions for eating or drinking, follow them.

Take certain medications.

During your consultation, discuss the medications you regularly take with your surgeon. They may recommend not taking any medications that could interfere with the anesthesia or induce quick bleeding. For example, you should avoid blood thinners, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
