Ensuring you don’t place anything too heavy—like a shed or driveway—over a drain field ensures it can continue properly dispersing water into the soil. But does that mean the area has no other potential use? Planting over drain fields is an excellent way to make the most of a leach field while simultaneously benefiting your septic system—here’s why.

Why Plant Over Drain Fields?

septic systemWhile installing a walkway or parking a vehicle over a drain field is not recommended, planting in this area offers several benefits. Plants remove moisture and nutrients from the soil, which will help the septic’s drain system function optimally—the plants will thrive on the septic system’s water and nutrients while reducing erosion and preventing over-saturated soil. Additionally, some homeowners have limited landscaping possibilities and want to make the most of their lot—a patch of wildflowers or decorative grasses are each excellent, eye-catching options that offer a boost in curb appeal.

Drainfield Planting Guidelines

Typically speaking, growing shallow-rooted, herbaceous plants that aren’t overly water-loving are ideal. Most drain fields are installed relatively shallow, set a minimum of 6 inches below the soil’s surface. An array of underground perforated pipes in gravel trenches allow gray water to drain and be purified by the soil. Plants grown over the top of the field will remove excess nutrients and moisture from the soil. However, if they have a deep-set root system or need a lot of water, such as a tree, shrub, or certain decorative plants, roots can clog the drain pipes and will need to be removed. That’s why plants like ornamental grasses or groundcovers are excellent drain field planting options. For planting shrubs or trees, plant far away from the drain field and septic tank to ensure the root systems of these plantings don’t invade and disrupt the septic system.
