When water pipes burst, they can cause significant damage to your home. In addition to preventing your plumbing system from working correctly, the water can degrade building materials, including wood support beams, drywall, and insulation. While the top cause for burst pipes is typically structural damage, other factors can contribute. The more you know about the following causes, the easier it is to prevent a problem.

What Leads to Pipes Bursting?

1. Tree Roots

As trees in your yard grow over time, their roots spread further into the soil. These roots can eventually encounter pipes buried in your yard, applying pressure on the material until cracks form or the pipe bursts.

Many older systems are made from cast iron, which is easily penetrable, while newer materials, such as PVC, are more resistant to intrusion. To avoid this issue, plant trees far away from your underground plumbing. Consider replacing old plumbing with PVC pipes.

2. Water Pressure

plumbingThe recommended water pressure for home plumbing is between 40 and 60 pounds per square inch (psi); however, the system's specific water pressure limits are usually labeled on the pipes. Those who use 60 psi or higher can cause theirs to burst. Therefore, if you notice this disparity, have a plumber inspect your system and adjust your water pressure accordingly.

3. Clogs

Over time, pipes will usually experience a buildup of debris—often made of rust or minerals from steel pipes, grease, soap, or hair. This clog disrupts the water flow and causes pressure to rise behind the blockage—sometimes to the pipe's bursting point.

Avoid flushing any products besides toilet paper and refrain from pouring bacon fat and other greasy substances down the sink. Use a lint catcher in drains to catch hair and soap. Additionally, hire a plumber for periodic water jetting to keep clogs from forming.
