1. Confirm the Problem

Cold temperatures make metal components in garage doors contract and seize up. The bottom of the door can also freeze to the ground. However, before jumping to this conclusion, confirm there are no other issues, such as dead batteries in the remote.

If you have determined the door is frozen, you will need to check which parts might be causing the issue. Disconnect the door from the lift mechanism. This is usually done by pulling an emergency release cord, which likely has a red handle. If the door opens but seems to stick at points, certain mechanical parts may have frozen. However, if it doesn’t move at all, it’s probably frozen to the ground.

2. Get the Door Working Again

Opening and closing the door a few times will dislodge frost and may loosen stiff mechanical parts. You may have to apply lubricant to the metal tracks, as well.

When you need to defrost a door that’s frozen to the ground, use a heat gun or pour boiling water along the bottom of the door. You could also scrape away the ice or melt it with rock salt. However, salt only works at temperatures above 10 degrees. Salt will also corrode your garage door, so always clean the bottom section immediately after employing this method. 

3. Prevent Further Freezing 

During winter, lubricate the door once a month with a product that’s specifically designed for garage doors. Remove any old, excess grease before applying the new lubricant. 

Regularly clear away water and snow from around the door to stop it from freezing to the ground. When it’s safe to do so, leave the overhead door slightly ajar. Lubricate the rubber seal at the bottom of the door and spread sand at the base to prevent further issues.
