While extreme measures, like surgery, can correct your vision, there isn’t much else you can do to improve it. Be mindful of your everyday activities, as there are a few that can significantly impact your eyesight.

What’s Diminishing My Vision?

1. Blue Light

Most digital screens, like computers, TVs, and smartphones, emit blue light, and long-term exposure harms the retinas over time. This damage increases the risk of several ocular conditions, such as macular degeneration and myopia.

To protect the eyes, use screen covers and special glasses that filter blue light. You can also limit screen time by going on a walk or reading a book instead of using digital devices for entertainment.

2. UV Exposure

People who spend a lot of time outside, like fishermen and construction workers, expose their eyes to high amounts of UV rays. The light increases the risk for eye diseases, like cataracts, ocular & skin  cancer, and photokeratitis.

visionAlways wear sunglasses that provide full-spectrum UV protection whenever you’re outside, and shade the eyes with a hat if possible. Be wary of staring at reflective surfaces, like the ocean, as they direct UV rays back into the eyes.

3. Tobacco Usage

The smoke from cigars and cigarettes will waft toward the eyes, drying them. This dryness may develop into dry eye syndrome, and it can also form fatty deposits in the back of the eye and lead to macular degeneration. Kick the habit by calling a quitline for help, using nicotine patches, or working with a quit coach.
